The Vietnam memorial is so very sad. Simple, dignified; 58,000 names carved into stone, 58,00 lives lost for nothing.
I saw the Korean War memorial one evening when there was a full moon. Somehow it was far more evocative, even spooky, at night. The statues were so lifelike, the expression on the face of the man in the rear, as he looked over his shoulder, so perfect for the tableau that you could feel his fear. A brilliant piece of living sculpture.
Happy TT…what a great post…on Veteran’s Day I will be working.

Great list. It’s great to see that our veterans are remembered because we owe them our freedom.

Excellent post. The Korean War Memorial is my favourite, but the Marine Corps is a bit special as I come from a Marine family (very large Marine family…). That one’s in Arlington, VA, btw. The NPS seems to not be able to recognise the Potomac separating it from DC. There’s also a miniature version (about half size) of it in Harlingen, TX where the Marine Military Academy (only official Marine Corps secondary school in the US) is located.

I live on a military post, so I’m sure there’ll be SOMETHING going on on Veteran’s Day.
I’ve seen a few of these. My father-in-law is very active in the American Legion, and Veteran’s Day is always a big deal.

I’ll be working…but will make time to read about veterans and giving quiet thanks. Serving in the military is something I could never imagine doing…I am in awe of those that do…
We should all honor our veterans as well as those who are currently serving in our armed forces. Daily they defend our right to say whatever we so desire, be it in person or online. They may not agree with what you say but will defend your right to say it to the end.
Very important post. Thanks for sharing. Although the memorials in DC/VA are vast, the USS Arizona left the biggest impact on me since the slow boat ride out and back forced extra time for reflection.
Our TT is here – on the lighter side.

I wish I could visit them all. There’s such peace in these monuments.
Thanks for making this list
As the wife of an active duty soldier who has done a 15 month deployment to Iraq, I appreciate seeing other people outside of our little circle remember. Remember what so many have given so they can have the freedoms they do.
Thank you,
also, thanks for visiting my ABC TT….After I finish, I am not sure what I will do…but thanks for asking!
I can’t wait to visit one of these places. Thanks for the list.
My father and brother are vets. I had the opportunity to visit Pearl Harbor with my Dad in the spring. It was something that he had always wanted to do.
Thanks for putting together this list!

These are great ideas! You can also do your own commemoration. A local elementary school principal brought scouts and Marines together for a flag ceremony. I have taken my son to church on days like Veteran’s Day and Memorial day and we pray for soliders and Veterans.

Thank you all for the kind comments, and for additional resources for remembering our veterans. My personal gratitude to all who have served in our armed forces, for ensuring the freedoms we have today.

Neat site! My husband is a sculptor who creates Memorials. He is currently working on one that will go on the bluff in our hometown. But in the past few years, he created one for the U.S. Navy to commemorate the Navy’s role in the D-Day invasion. The D-Day monument was installed this September on the beach at Normandy in France. It has 3 figures, standing each is 9 feet tall! See pictures of the installation and dedication ceremony at http://normandymonument.org/main.htm

You’ve put together a nice list of ‘Lest we forget!’ sites. However, in addition to the Women Veterans Memorial, you might want to include the recently dedicated U.S. Air Force Memorial in Washington, DC. Cheers!
Great post. Thank you Grandpa and Justin along with all others who fought. Hope to see more of these places someday.
Nice list! Another great place to go is the D-Day museum in New Orleans. Very sobering.

His CD is called “The State vs. Radric Davis” …Does anyone own it?
Am I strange for being a “cracka” who likes this music? LOL
Thanks in advance!
