The Cadillac Ranch in Amarillo, TX
The Great American Road Trip sometimes seems a lifetime away. This is one of those iconic summer trips that is portrayed in movies and commercials, but rarely does an American family take a multi week journey on the road any more.
Our family was tired of doing the same old thing, as visiting theme parks or the beach can get old. We decided to set off into the sunset one evening and drive across the country. A few days into our drive, we made a pit stop in Amarillo, TX, home to some wacky, yet fun attractions. As we were leaving town early the next morning, we glimpsed a strange sight from Interstate 40. There was a very large field of dirt, and sticking out of the ground, gleaming of morning dew, was a row of perfectly angled Cadillacs.
We pulled off the highway and found our way to what is known as The Cadillac Ranch. It is actually a public sculpture. It is set in a private field, yet the public is encourage to explore, and even leave their own art on these massive metal automobiles set in a cow pasture.
Of course, the entire family had to see what this was all about. There were spray paint cans begging to be picked up. So we did what anyone else would do. We looked around to make sure we weren’t being observed, and then we got to town painting our names and leaving a piece of our family at The Cadillac Ranch. That is a family memory we will never forget. And its free!

I have no idea why I’d heard of the Cadillac Ranch before – was it in a movie? I’m really glad I read this, though, because now I know what the heck it is! Thanks.
