Enchanted Rock in Fredericksburg, Texas

Enchanted Rock in Fredericksburg, Texas

Enchanted Rock is a huge, pink granite dome that is 425 feet above ground and covers 640 acres, one of the largest batholiths (underground rock formation uncovered by erosion) in the United States.

This amazing rock has long been admired, from the time of the Tonkawa Indians and conquistadors to present day Texans.  The Indians believed that ghost fires flickered on top, and they heard mysterious cracking and groaning noises, which we now know to be mostly likely due to the rock heating by day and contracting in the cool air at night.

The Tonkawas once captured a Conquistador who ended up escaping from them in the rocks, which led to the creation of a legend about a white man who could weave enchantments in the rocks.  Cool story, I think.

Now Enchanted rock is designated a National Natural Landmark, and visitors can partake in backpacking, camping, hiking, rock climbing, picnicking, geological study, bird watching, and star gazing.  The park is open year round, but sometimes on the weekends they reach parking capacity and close, so it’s a good idea to call ahead and check before driving out there.

On site facilities include restrooms with showers, camping sites and picnicking sites as well as a four-mile hiking trail, an interpretive center and a Texas State Park Store.

Entry fees are $6 for ages thirteen and older, camping fees are from $10 to $15.  You have to bring your own firewood, and it’s very important that you don’t disturb with plant or animal life, as well as not mess with geological, Indian or historical artifacts.  But you can still enjoy the scenery, the exercise and the beautiful view up top all you want.

And, that view is spectacular.  It’s a great place to meditate or find inspiration. I even know someone who’s was proposed marriage to up there.  What an incredibly romantic spot!

If you don’t want to stay on site, there are plenty of places to stay in Fredericksburg and many other things to do in the area.  It’s a great day trip or vacation spot!
