Everyday, thousands of commuters use ferries to travel around the San Francisco Bay, to and from home and office. But ferries are not for commuters alone! This weekend, my daughter and I boarded a Golden Gate Ferry for a 30-minute trip from the Ferry Building in San Francisco to Sausalito, across the Bay.

Driving up from the south bay, we parked across the street from the Ferry Building, in the Ace Parking Lot, which offers a discount when your parking ticket is validated at any merchant in the Ferry Building.

The ticket counter for Golden Gate Ferry is behind the south end of the Ferry Building. After purchasing our round trip tickets, we went back inside the Ferry Building to find lunch to-go, from Mastrelli’s Delicatessen. With our sandwiches in hand, we boarded the ferry for our trip to Sausalito.

Scenery on the way over was beautiful – the ferry has many spots to watch the sights, including upper and lower decks and a sunroom on the top for excellent views of the Bay and Golden Gate Bridges, as well as Angel Island and Alcatraz. Snacks and beverages are available on board, as well as comfortable seats indoor and out. The crew was helpful and efficient, and the boat was clean and well maintained.

Here are some of my favorite photos from the trip:
