Holiday Ice Skating in the Bay Area
by Gudrun Enger of Kitchen Gadget Girl
Even though last weekend’s temperatures were in the high 70’s, two Bay Area ice skating rinks opened for the holiday season and are definitely worth a visit. Chose between San Francisco and San Jose, or visit both!
In San Francisco, the Holiday Ice Rink at Embarcadero Center, a large outdoor rink in Justin Herman Plaza, behind Four Embarcadero Center and across the street from the Ferry Building is open November 12 through January 4 from 10:00 a.m. – 10:00 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 10:00 a.m. – 11:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Ticket prices are $8 for adults and $4.50 for seniors and children under 10, except on the weekends, when prices are $8.50 and $5, respectively. Skate rental will run an additional $3.50, or bring your own. 90 minute sessions are offered throughout the day, be sure to check the website for rink closure dates.
San Jose offers up its own brand of fun with Downtown Ice, the largest outdoor rink in the south bay. Located between the Fairmont Hotel and the San Jose Museum of Art, Downtown Ice is just part of the many offerings in San Jose during the holidays. Don’t miss Sunday, November 23rd at 3:30 p.m. – Sharkie, the San Jose Sharks’ Mascot, will be at the rink playing with the kids and helping new skaters. Check the Downtown Ice website for discount coupons, including an Early Bird Special for a free child ticket with every adult ticket purchased.

these are the kind of activities I find I need to schedule now, otherwise, the time just gets away from me. Before we know it, Christmas will be upon us!
It may not be Rockefeller Plaza in NYC but skating in Justin Herman Plaza sure comes close! Love this time of year!
Cool! I had no idea they had outdoor ice skating in San Fran. The San Jose one looks awesome, too!

Sharon – I have only skated once at Rockefeller Plaza, and it was a dream. The lights of New York are special. But somehow, being able to skate outdoors with short sleeve shirts in December makes San Francisco just as wonderful!
Lunchbox – I think the San Francisco rink has been around for many years, but this was the first time we got up there to see it. Funny, it has been so warm this year, I think the outdoor rinks must be working overtime.
Happy Thanksgiving!
