Kirby Science Discovery Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota

Have you ever lifted up a car single-handedly? It’s just one of the many interesting things you can do at the Kirby Science Discovery Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
The old high school building in downtown Sioux Falls is home to a number of organizations, but there’s one area of the “Washingon Pavilion of Arts and Science” that keeps us coming back. With three floors of exhibits, the Kirby Science Discovery Center has something for everyone.
Everything in the museum is hands-on, and it’s fun for everyone from toddlers to grown-ups. My kids and I had visited two times before my husband got to accompany us there. He had wondered why I liked it so much until he visited himself and didn’t want to leave.
On the first level, there are exhibits about space, physics, and a water table/slide area for younger kids.
One floor up, there are things to build, music to make, mirrors to investigate, and magnets to polarize. Around the corner, you can learn about South Dakota’s agricultural products, try to make an earthquake-proof structure, or construct an arch from foam blocks.
Head up the musical stairs and there’s still more: a toddler area and an arts section with string art, feltboard quilts, a mobile-making area, and a piano like the one in the Tom Hanks movie Big.
The newest exhibit area, Fit for Life, has to do with exercise, and you can play basketball, be in a wheelchair race, test your reflexes, climb a rock wall, or run a race.
We’ve enjoyed every visit we’ve made to the Kirby Science Discovery Center. It’s a great place to visit in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
Do you have a favorite museum?

Whoever came up with the idea of hands-on museums for kids was a genius. That’s the best way for kids to learn and be interested in learning, by DOING. The Kirby Science Center looks great!
