Lower Fort Garry National Historic Site of Canada in Manitoba
One of my favorite things to do as a parent is to take my children to places I enjoyed as a child. If I’m lucky, I’ll enjoy it with them as much as I remembered. One of these such places is Lower Fort Garry, north of Winnipeg, Manitoba.
Located along the Red River, Lower Fort Garry is the oldest stone fur trading post still intact in North America. Costumed interpreters make the Hudson’s Bay Company post come to life as they go about their day-to-day routines.
Our most recent visit was on a Wednesday, when “children’s day” activities were specially designed for kids. Our children helped to do the laundry and march in the military as well as learn to play children’s games of the day. When they completed all of their tasks, they received a small prize.
A modern visitors center welcomes people to the fort, who then follow a path that goes out to the interpretive area. It’s an interesting piece of living history for both children and adults, and I was delighted to share it with my children.
Lower Fort Garry is located about one hour north of Winnipeg, near Selkirk, Manitoba. Its hours vary by season, with the fort buildings open during the summer months only. Admission is $7.80 for adults, $3.90 for youth ages 6-16, or $19.60 per family (CDN).
