Like most Mardi Gras celebrations, the one sponsored by Sandestin Beach & Golf Resort will include toe-tappin’ music, spicy eats, decorated floats, and a barrage of beads, but this year it will be the dogs who steal the show. The newest addition to the weekend event is a Mardi Paws Pooch Celebration and “Krewe of Arfeous” Dog Parade.
The fun begins with the selection of a canine king and queen from local shelters that rescue and care for homeless and abandoned animals. During the days leading up to the main event, King and Queen Arfeous make special appearances designed to create awareness about the thousands of homeless and abused animals across the country. On parade day the streets are filled with costumed dogs and their human owners, who throw beads and parade favors to the crowds lining the streets. Themed convertibles, small floats, golf carts, bicycles, and decorated wagons will be everywhere and Mardi Gras music will fill the air. “Yappie Hour” and the awards ceremony is held immediately following the parade with prizes being awarded for different categories.
The Mystic Krewe of Arfeous Mardi Gras dog parade is one of the premier canine events on Florida’s Emerald Coast, with members of the four-pawed community coming far and wide to participate. Each year, a portion of the proceeds from registration fees, merchandise sales, etc. are donated to worthy animal welfare groups. The parade steps off at 2 p.m. on February 14th in the beautiful Village of Baytowne Wharf at Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort, located in Destin, Florida.
