Every time I visit the San Diego Zoo, I am amazed at how the Zoo expertly shares their message of conservation with their visitors in an engaging way. My visit to the preview of the new Polar Bear Plunge exhibit did not disappoint. The San Diego Zoo has revamped this already popular exhibit to give visitors plenty of hands on opportunities to learn about polar bears and global warming.
Here are some interesting additions to the new exhibit:
Giant Story Books
Families can read giant story books about polar bears together. The stories featured include the true story of two orphaned polar bear clubs and their journey to the San Diego Zoo as well as the profile of a real life Arctic researcher.
Explore an Arctic Helicopter
How many times do kids have a chance to climb into a real research helicopter? This was a highlight for most of the kids at the Polar Bear Plunge Preview.
Raid the Refrigerator
Everyone will love checking out this model of the average polar bear meal. The refrigerator next door includes the average size meal for human kids, teens, and adults. Big difference!
Global Warming Hits Home
The Zoo’s models of the polar ice cap give visitors a dramatic understanding of the effects of global warming. Docents are available at the exhibit to educate visitors about how they can make simple lifestyle changes to reduce the impact of global warming.

This is very sad to think than in few years Polar Bear will only live behind bars!! Time to think Green…
Rick Schwartz, the ambassador for the Zoological Society of San Diego and senior animal keeper at the San Diego Zoo, points out an interesting fact. He said, “When [the exhibit] was first built, there was no concern for polar bear habitat. Everything was fine and the numbers were stable. In the short 13 or 14 years since then, a lot has happened to polar bear habitat.”Still, all scientists are not on board that the global warming problem is being caused by man. Schwartz said that only 84 percent of scientists think the problem is manmade – leaving almost 20 percent that think the change is just a natural cycle. The zoo’s stance is simple – regardless of what is causing the problem, the polar bears are being threatened. But, the exhibit is designed to show visitors that it isn’t too late to make a change and help the polar bears.

[...] We’ve all had icky exes or past relationships we never really got closure from. Wouldn’t it be fun to do something that a little zany to really help you move on? If you’re harboring some pent-up feelings of resentment toward that icky ex, this could be a fun event to attend – things are getting chilly in San Diego’s Air Conditioned Lounge! [...]
