Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, although often desolate, has a unique beauty found in the woods of the area. As a child, a trip to Tahquamenon Falls was a natural part of a vacation to Mackinac Island, traveling across the UP. With the nearest town called Paradise, how could you not want to go?
Famous for: Its waterfalls. Upper Tahquamenon Falls is one of the largest waterfalls east of the Mississippi, and the lower falls, though not as large, are also beautiful.
Admission: $6-$8/day; additional fees outlined at the Michigan DNR site.
Travelers will like: Hiking on the trails and visiting the waterfalls.
Best hotel in the park: The Tahquamenon Falls Lodge sleeps up to eight people and rents for $110/night.
Camping in the park: Approximately 350 campsites in four sites, ranging from rustic to modern with 50-amp service.
Best months to visit: Summer to see the waterfalls.
Nearest major cities: Sault Ste. Marie is 60 miles away; Detroit is a 400-mile drive.
More info can be found at: The Michigan DNR’s Tahquamenon State Park page.
