Building an Igloo at The Works, Edina, MN

With young children, hands-on museums are always a hit, and we found a gem in a former school building in Edina, Minnesota, just outside Minneapolis.  “The Works-A Technology Discovery Center” isn’t as big as the Science Museum of Minnesota or the Minnesota Children’s Museum, but what it lacks in size it makes up for in interesting exhibits.

Whether playing a magic harp, using a pulley system, building an igloo, designing and racing cars, setting up a marble run, or playing with various lights and sounds activities, kids are captivated at The Works.  There’s so much to do that they end up moving from one thing to another just so they don’t miss anything, and then returning to their favorite activities.

When the kids need a break from the exhibit area, there’s a workshop room with guided activities and volunteers to help. The themes change monthly; the day we were there we made (and tested) paper airplanes.

The Works is open 1-2 days a week, so you have to plan a family visit for those times, but field trips and birthday parties can be arranged at other times.  Although the recommended age range for the museum is 5 and up, there’s plenty to do for toddlers.

If you want to cultivate an interest in science, The Works is a great place to let them explore.
