The rather awkward-looking elephant seal has become an icon of thee San Luis Obispo County coastline. Despite its amusing appearance, its sheer size makes it an amazing and slightly unnerving animal to view up close (which you can). There's a huge rookery some 12 miles north of Cambria at Piedras Blancas, where the number of animals peaks in late January (mothers with babies!), late April, and late October.
