A new Sacramento River Trail -- with lanes wandering the riparian forest on both banks -- is close to completion as a major urban recreation corridor. Already, it is used enthusiastically by residents and visitors. Not only that, but when all regional trail plans reach fruition, Redding shall form a hub for a remarkable regional trail network extending north to Shasta Lake, west to Trinity Lake, southeast to Mount Lassen, and perhaps even south along the river to Red Bluff and beyond. Not only that, but a $64 million-dollar museum complex, celebrating this region's natural and human history, is being built near the main urban trailheads. It seeks to educate visitors in a panoply of bold, creative ways. But wait, there's more. A spectacular new footbridge designed by European architect Santiago Calatrava, who won a design competition for a new Oakland cathedral, will link both riverbanks at the Turtle Bay museum with a graceful, 700 foot-long ribbon.
