Cabrillo National Monument marks the spot where the explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo became the first European to tread upon the West Coast. The year was 1542. If the history doesn't sound tempting, perhaps the panoramic views or the 19th-century lighthouse will. For a more active day, there's a two-mile forest trail.
