The Leadville National Fish Hatchery was established in 1889: at 117 years old, it is the second-oldest National Fish Hatchery in existence.Â It was started to provide trout to areas where the supply was dwindling, and initially distributed fish all over the Rocky Mountain region.Â Now it stocks 23 locations within Colorado, as far north as Fort Collins and as far south as Trinidad, 15 miles north of the New Mexico border. 6 miles southwest of Leadville, it is slightly lower in elevation than the city (in case you didnât know, Leadville is the highest incorporated city in the United States at around 10,200 feet), but the Hatchery is still high enough in elevation to be able ... more on tripadvisor.com

5.0: A great place

The Fish Hatchery was one of the first places I visited when I moved to Leadville a year ago. The main reason I moved here was the mountains; now that I was here, I found that I didn’t know where to go to really get to them, without embarking on a serious backpacking trip. I just wanted an introduction to those incredible mountains I had been looking at every day. I had read a bit about the hatchery and its history, and that there was a one-mile nature trail there, at the base of Mt. Massive, the second-highest peak in Colorado. And it was only a 10 to 15 minute drive from town. It sounded good. Now I go every chance I get, in warm sunny weather and in raging blizzards. It is my haven: it embodies so much of what I love about Colorado: that unique combination of history and natural splendor. It is something no visitor to the Leadville area should miss.
