Makawao is located in upcountry Maui and is the
ultimate in a Hawaiian vacation. This is the heart of Hawaiian ranching country
where you will get the feeling you have entered the Old West and the world of
cowboys and rodeos. See the famous
flower of Maui, the Protea, when you visit the Kula Botanical Gardens and take
one of the walking tours. The city also has many trails and walking tours of
the town so that you can get out and about and enjoy the fantastic weather.
Stay in a bed and breakfast or even on a working ranch and dine on the best
cuisine on the island in the restaurants.
Whether you want to engage in surfing or just watch, Ho’okipa Beach Park is the place to be. This beach is
one of the premier destinations on Maui for water sports and has some of the
best waves of the coast. There are three picnic pavilions where you can enjoy
your lunch and take in the sights. Play in the sand or just lounge on the beach
and work on your tan.
Hosmer’s Grove is located just outside the Haleakala
National Park and dates back to the colonial times of the island when newcomers
brought other plants and animals to Maui.
There are many species of plants and trees grown in this reforestation
area. Take advantage of the educational activities for visitors of all ages
where you can learn how to plant seeds and seedlings and take care of them. The
half-mile hike through the grove takes you through several ecological areas and
gives you a glimpse of what this mountain looked like before the plants and
trees were removed.
