Simply amazing

Something about this place is very special. I'm not an especially religious person and wasn't raised in the Catholic faith, but this place touched me deeply. To begin with, the architecture is simply amazing. You see the white Mission shining in the distance as ... CocoLoco, a user of Tripadvisor. Read full review on tripadvisor

Beauty, history, serene must see

The Mission San Xavier del Bac proves well worth the trip, whether for historic, sightseeing, or religious purposes. A short drive north of Tubac and Tucumcacori, or a short drive south of Tucson will bring you to this must-see historic place. As you approach exit 92 on I-17, you see the startlingly white towers and dome of the Mission contrasted against the bright blue sky in the middle of the Sonoran Desert. The Mission stands on the Tohono Oodham nation (the Spanish called these people “Papago“ for “meat eater“, but the Tohono Oodham use their real name). Signs as you come off of the ramp remind you that you now entered a reservation. If you come from the south on I-19, you will see a magnificent rare cristate Saguaro cactus on the hill to your left just before the road to the mission goes under I-19. The cristate Saguaro cacti grow into wild fanned and contorted shapes at the top for reasons unknown, rather than the traditional shape such as you see in many Southwest themed pictures or illustrations. The signs clearly show you the way to the Mission and parking. Large white rocks and paint-lined timbers mark the parking spaces on the gravel lots. On one edge of the parking lots you will see the San Xavier Plaza--”Arts, Crafts, Café”. At the opposite end of the parking lots, you see the Mission. Gates and rocks mark off a large square blocking vehicles from the front of the Mission. A long ocotillo roofed ramada borders one side of the square, and behind the ocotillo ramada you see Grotto Hill. A large traditional Tohono Oodham symbol crafted in rock decorates the square in front of the Mission. The Mission ... Azilla, a user of Tripadvisor. Read full review on tripadvisor
