- The Broad Street Market was founded in 1860, and still thrives today as a culturally rich place to experience the broad diversity of fresh food, people, and city life.Harrisburg’s Broad Street Market is both an historic landmark and a focal point of the retail and community life of the Capital City. Established on Broad Street by the Verbeke family in 1860, it is today one of the oldest continuously operating farmers markets in the country. During the Civil War, farmers who stood at the newly established Broad Street Market helped to feed the 300,000 Union soldiers who mustered through nearby Camp Curtin. Serving as the long-time anchor of retail activity in the Midtown business corridor along Third Street and only three blocks north of the Capitol Complex, the Broad Street Market fills three city blocks between Third and Sixth Streets.
