Founded in 1889 by Charles Reed Bishop, the Hawaii Maritime Center was originally established to display Hawaiian artifacts. Since its opening, it has expanded to include millions of royal heirlooms and artifacts, including documents and photographs of 19th century Hawaii. It is now known as the largest museum in the state, recognized throughout the world as housing premier cultural collections and public educational programs. This center has been temporarily closed, and has not yet announced its plans for re-opening.
