The Kansas African American Museum was established in 1997 to tell the story of the African American experience in Kansas. The museum is housed in the former Calvary Baptist Church, which was the epicenter of Witchita's early-20th century African American population. Today, the museum is hoping to move to a larger facility in the heart of Witchita's waterfront museum district, but it still operates at its original location.
