In 1990, Honolulu recognized the ecological damage caused by over 3 million annual visitors, and set in motion a city improvement plan. Thus came the Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve, one of Hawaii's premier natural resources dedicated to preserving marine life. These environmental efforts inspired facility enhancements as well as educational programs throughout Honolulu, all with the purpose of enlightening visitors and residents.
