- Description of Surrounding Area :Big Bear Lake is a year round resort located in the San Bernardino mountains in Southern California. Average daytime temperature in the summer is 72 degrees. Big Bear Lake�s 22 miles of shoreline islined with huge boulders and juniper and pine trees.Lake activities include swimming, boating, sailboarding, water-skiing, jet-skiing, and fishing for bass, trout, and catfish. Fisherman and walkersenjoy the walkway along shoreline of the Stanfield Marsh nature preserve. In the winter, Snow Summit and Big Bear Mountain offer the best skiing and snowboarding in Southern California. When the snow is gone, thewinter�s ski trails become mountain bike trails. Biking and hiking are popular activities. There are over 500 miles of trails throughout the San Bernardino National Forest. Pacific Crest Trail is popular for hikers and horseback riders. Horseback riding is available year round. The Discovery Center features interpretive and educational programs by staff naturalists. Moonridge Animal Park is home to the only grizzlies still in Big Bear. Golfers may play 9 holes at the Big Bear Mountain Golf Course. Astronomers photograph solar flares and sunspots from the Big Bear Solar Observatory which sits on the causeway off the North Shore. During the summer, tours are available to the public.
