carnton is a must-see for anyone visiting the franklin, tn. area who has even the slightest interest in history. i have visited many plantation houses in the south and have even stayed in some that are bed and breakfasts. although they all have an interesting history, carnton is different because... amazing piece of history in beautiful surroundings
I visited the Carnton Plantation in may 2003, on a humid and very very wet day. I knew little about the Civil WAr and was concerned that this may mean that i did dont get as much from the visit as would the american friends i was travelling with ...i could not have been more wrong! Historically Significant
During the Battle of Franklin in the Civil War, Carnton Plantation was used as a field hospital for the Confederates. Many soldiers died there, including 4 generals.
