- Monkey Jungle was founded in 1933 by Joseph DuMond as a study habitat for primate behavior. Six crab-eating Macaques from southeast Asia were released onto the original 10-acre site, and descendants of those original six are now a colony numbering in the hundreds.To fund his research, DuMond began allowing visitors to the site for 10 cents, but the territorial monkeys viewed the human visitors as intruders. To alleviate this problem he built a cage for the humans, similar to the system in place today, where visitors walk in caged pathways while the monkeys roam free.In addition to the original study area, the DuMond Conservancy has developed a 4-acre Amazonian Rainforest area where endangered monkeys have ... more on gocitykids.com
