Over 600,000 visitors frequent the Honolulu Zoo annually, which is no surprise given its current title as the largest zoo within a 2,300 mile radius. Established by King David Kalakaua in 1874, this zoo exists to educate the public about wildlife as well as conservation principles. Interestingly, it is also the only zoo in the U.S. to originate solely from a King's grant of royal lands to the people.
