A good day trip

I have been going to the Rio Grande Zoo for over 25 years. It has come a long, long, LONG way from the rows of stinky cages I remember as a child. Rio Grande is smaller than some other big city zoos, but it is very well done. A lot of thought and creativity has gone into many of the newer exhibits. I feel that the size is actually a plus, because you aren't fighting big crowds and walking for miles. Not that there isn't plenty of walking to do (bring your walking shoes)--you will be ready to rest when you are done. You can buy a pass to the zoo, or you can buy a combo pass to the zoo, aquarium, and botanic gardens. There is a train that runs to the aquarium and botanic gardens, and I believe it costs $1 to ride. Africa is the jewel of the zoo, and it is also the first part you should see if you are touring in the summer as it is the hottest part of the zoo.
